Quick Report: Cameroon 2-2 Tunisia

(GSM) Substitute Achille Webo set up two goals as Cameroon snatched a 2-2 draw against Tunisia in Lubango to scrape into the African Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

They will take on Egypt, who beat them in the 2008 final, in Benguela. Meanwhile Zambia, who went through at the top of Group D on goals scored after beating Gabon 2-1, will face Nigeria in Lubango.

Tunisia, eliminated after drawing their three games, had gone ahead in the first minute through Amine Chermiti and again in the 63rd when defender Aurelien Chedjou netted into his own goal.

The central defence was caught snoozing when striker Chermiti connected with a Khaled Souissi cross to head home after 50 seconds.

Cameroon piled on the pressure but proved too clumsy as Tunisia s back four held…

Pelusso leaves Paraguay post

Paraguay have parted company with coach Gerardo Pelusso late in their disastrous CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying campaign.

Pelusso s departure was confirmed by the Paraguayan Football Association (APF) on Monday, with the country s chances of reaching Brazil 2014 all but over.

Paraguay are bottom of the group in South America with eight points, eight behind fifth-placed Venezuela with four games to play.

(The APF) informs that coach Gerardo Pelusso has officially left the APF as trainer of the Paraguay football team at a meeting he held with the national team s director, they said in a statement.

Paraguay were beaten 2-1 by Chile on Friday with their next qualifier not until September 6, when they host Bolivia.

Rakitic keen for ´cup´ success with Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola should not be surprised if Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic asks him to put the kettle on after Tuesday s Champions League match at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola s latest reunion with the club where he made an indelible mark as a player and a coach comes two weeks after Barcelona stormed to a 4-0 Group C victory over the Premier League leaders at Camp Nou.

Although many familiar faces remain from Guardiola s time in charge of the Spanish champions, Rakitic counts himself as an admirer from afar, having only signed for Barca in 2014.

The Croatia international s sublime midfield displays have made him a permanent fixture in Luis Enrique s best XI and, addressing a pre-match news conference at the City s training base adjacent…

Cazorla still playing through pain after Villarreal appearance

Former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has admitted he is still playing through the pain after being given a pre-season run-out for Villarreal.

The 33-year-old came on as a substitute in a 1-1 draw with Hercules on Tuesday, making his first appearance since October 2016.

Cazorla s six-year spell at Emirates Stadium came to an end at the conclusion of 2017-18, after a series of debilitating injuries kept him on the sidelines.

However, the Spain international admitted after the match that he did not enjoy his appearance, and will not feel like a footballer until his health improves.

I am only thinking about getting rid of the pain as soon as possible because I am not enjoying what I am doing,  Cazorla told Marca.

I want to train with my co…

Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho fire Man Utd to win over West Ham

Rasmus Hojlund celebrated his 21st birthday in style as the summer signing’s fine opener and a brace from fellow young gun Alejandro Garnacho fired Manchester United to a 3-0 win against West Ham.

Fresh from 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo’s stoppage-time stunner settling Thursday’s chaotic contest at Wolves, the Red Devils’ talented young talents came to the fore once more.

Summer signing Hojlund rifled United ahead with his fourth Premier League goal in as many games, with 19-year-old Garnacho then seeing an effort deflect in off Nayef Aguerd before firing home United’s third against David Moyes’ Hammers.

The goalscorers and Thursday’s matchwinner Mainoo mimicked West Ham forward Mohammed Kudus’ celebration after Garnacho’s first goal, sitting toget…

Prediction: Tottenham vs Brighton

Best Odds: 7/5

Bookmaker:

In what could be an action-packed affair on Saturday afternoon, Tottenham will welcome Brighton to north London.

Tottenham

Starting with the hosts, suffering last-gasp heartbreak away at Everton as they eventually had to settle for a 2-2 draw last weekend, Tottenham will be desperate to claim an immediate response here. Missing out on what they had billed as a golden opportunity at Goodison Park, Spurs will certainly be excited to make a return to north London on Saturday afternoon. Gaining a string of plaudits under Ange Postecoglou and with their sights firmly set on securing a Champions League return in 2024, the former Celtic boss has seen his squad suffer just a pair of defeats from any of their previous 10 appearances across all …

Everton´s Baines to miss last two matches due to surgery

Everton full-back Leighton Baines is to miss the final two Premier League matches of the season after undergoing ankle surgery.

The former Wigan Athletic man limped off injured during last weekend s 2-0 defeat to Sunderland at Goodison Park.

It was confirmed earlier this week that Baines would see a specialist to determine the extent of the injury.

And manager Roberto Martinez confirmed ahead of the trip to West Ham that Baines struggled with the issue for the past three years and has undergone a procedure to correct the problem.

Leighton had a bit of instability in his ankle that flared up and it was painful in the last game, Martinez said.  It needed repair work so he had surgery on Wednesday.

It was a straightforward operation to clear …

Pellegrini unconcerned by Guardiola rumours

Manuel Pellegrini is not concerned about reports that Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has agreed to take over at Manchester City.

Guardiola – a treble-winner with Barcelona before moving to Germany – has a contract with the Bundesliga champions until the end of the season.

The Spaniard has been linked with the City job, but the incumbent coach feels the work he has done speaks for itself.

The only confidence I have always is about my work, Pellegrini, who led City to the Premier League title in 2013-14, said.

I never have any problem about my work so it doesn t matter what rumours say, if not it is impossible to work in every big team.

I don t analyse different rumours, people can talk or write about them if they want.

Ighalo ´buzzing´ after Man United loan is extended

A buzzing Odion Ighalo has thanked Shanghai Shenhua for allowing his loan move to Manchester United to be extended until January 2021.

Ighalo initially joined United in a temporary deal at the end of the January transfer window as the club sought cover in attack for the rest of the season, with Marcus Rashford suffering a long-term injury.

The signing of Ighalo raised eyebrows, but the former Watford man scored four goals in eight matches in all competitions starting just three of those games.

The season s suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic in March led to concerns United would lose the services of Ighalo before the conclusion of the 2019-20 campaign.

But United confirmed they had reached an agreement with Shanghai on Monday, leaving the 30-year-o…

Neymar is like Ronaldinho, his attitude will stop him reaching his potential – Giuly

Neymar has been compared to fellow Brazilian Ronaldinho, with Ludovic Giuly believing the Paris Saint-Germain star will never reach his potential.

Like the great Ronaldinho, Neymar has played for both Barcelona and PSG, albeit he moved from Catalonia to Paris, rather than the other way around.

One of the main motives behind Neymar s switch to PSG was reportedly his desire to win the Ballon d Or, which has been dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo and his former Barca team-mate Lionel Messi.

Yet despite helping to secure three straight Ligue 1 titles, Neymar has been unable to propel PSG to Champions League glory – coming closest when the Parisians reached the final last season – and at 29, his chances of winning football s most coveted personal prize look to be get…
